ICE Detention Release Paths
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operates a federal civil immigration detention system. ICE detention is distinct from criminal custody at Accomack County Jail, Eastern Shore Regional Jail, a VADOC prison, BOP, or a USMS holding facility. A person can leave one of those systems and enter ICE custody on the same day. Both agencies may accurately record that their own custody changed.
The receiving-agency entry is the bridge. If the local record names ICE, the Accomack County jail episode ended through transfer. Community release occurs only when ICE later releases the person under its own authority. Removal, continued detention, movement between facilities, or another custodial handoff are different outcomes and should not be inferred from a missing name.
| Event | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Released to ICE | Transfer from the prior custodian into immigration custody |
| ODLS facility result | Current ICE detention reported by the locator |
| No ODLS result | Inconclusive due to scope, timing, data, or release |
| ICE release document | Affirmative evidence of departure from ICE custody |
Search ICE Detention Status
The Online Detainee Locator System, or ODLS, is the official public starting point. The strongest search uses the person's A-number and country of birth. The alternative search requires exact first name, last name, date of birth, and country of birth. Exact entry matters because spelling, multiple surnames, spacing, and date errors can prevent a match.
- Obtain the A-number and country of birth from a lawful document when possible.
- Search ODLS with that pair before relying on a name-only query.
- If using biography, enter the exact names, date of birth, and country of birth.
- Record the facility or custody information shown and the access date.
- If no match appears, retry verified variants and contact the responsible ERO field office.
Recent booking, transfer, data variation, and system scope can all affect the result. ODLS silence is not an ICE release notice. It also cannot prove that the person has no state, local, federal criminal, or other immigration custody.
ICE Custody Contact Route
ICE's official locator should be paired with the record from the agency that handed the person over. The local jail can provide the actual transfer date and receiving agency. BOP can document departure from federal prison custody. A federal court docket may explain detention or release authority. Use the named ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations field office for a status question when ODLS is inconclusive.

Online Detainee Locator System
Search by A-number and country of birth, or by exact biographical fields.
For unresolved status, use ICE's official ERO field-office contact route.
Ask a precise question tied to an existing event. Provide the A-number, full name, date of birth, country of birth, prior facility, and approximate transfer date when lawfully known. Do not ask a local jail to certify a later ICE release. The local custodian can confirm only its own handoff.
Accomack Release to ICE
A local notation “released to ICE” is the most important Accomack-specific caution. Accomack County Jail may stop holding the person while immigration custody continues. The same can occur after ESRJ, which serves Accomack cases but is operated by Northampton. Request the release disposition and receiving agency instead of asking only for a date.
Virginia Jail VINE can report that a local or regional jail released or transferred someone. Its job ends with the reporting jail event and it is not connected to ICE. Preserve the source facility, event type, and event date. Then move to ODLS and the responsible ICE office. The Accomack County released-inmate search path keeps those systems separate.
Important: Departure from an Accomack jail to ICE is continued custody. Do not describe that handoff as community release.
ICE Release Record Proof
ODLS is oriented toward current detention, so it may not preserve a public profile after release. An affirmative ICE release paper or direct agency confirmation is stronger historical proof than a blank search. The prior jail's release sheet remains useful because it shows when local custody ended and who received the person, but it does not prove when ICE custody later ended.
Build the timeline with labeled dates: local booking, jail transfer, ICE intake if documented, ICE facility movements, immigration decision, and actual ICE release. Avoid calling each one a “release date.” A court filing can support legal context but may not equal the physical processing time or rule out a different hold.
Note: Preserve official documents and event labels because current-status locators can change after a transfer or release.
ICE and Federal Custody
BOP and USMS are separate from ICE. BOP's public locator can retain a past release date for federal prison records from 1982 forward. USMS manages federal pretrial and contract detention but has no matching public historical locator. Either system may hand a person to ICE, and its own release statement remains limited to that system.
If a BOP result says Released, check whether immigration custody followed. If a federal court ordered release from criminal detention, examine the docket and holding-facility record for a detainer. The federal order supplies authority but does not certify that ICE declined custody. Continue until an affirmative source identifies the final destination.
Two Accomack Jail Custodians
Accomack County operates its own jail. Eastern Shore Regional Jail is a separate Northampton-operated regional jail that also houses people from Accomack. ESRJ opened in May 2007 after replacing Northampton's 93-year-old, 30-bed jail. That dual structure determines which office holds the jail-to-ICE transfer entry.
For Accomack County Jail, request the release and receiving-agency record from the Accomack Sheriff. For ESRJ, route the request to Northampton. An Accomack court case can support the underlying criminal timeline, but the actual holding jail documents the handoff. The ESRJ release record route explains the regional custodian issue.
When ODLS Finds Nothing
Do not convert an empty ODLS search into a release claim. Confirm spelling and A-number first. Check whether the transfer was very recent, whether the prior agency named a different recipient, and whether the person could be in BOP, USMS, VADOC, or local custody. Contact the responsible immigration office with the verified identifiers.
A past Accomack County transfer may outlast the public locator's useful window. The best durable chain is the prior custodian's transfer entry, ICE's own release or movement documentation, and relevant court material. Each record answers a limited question. Together they distinguish a local release, an immigration transfer, and a later release from ICE detention.
