Virginia DOC Release Paths

The Virginia Department of Corrections is a statewide prison and community-supervision system, not an Accomack County jail. No VADOC prison was identified as physically located in Accomack County. An Accomack defendant can still become state-responsible, remain temporarily in a local or regional jail, move to a prison elsewhere in Virginia, and later leave prison on parole or another form of supervision.

Departure from a prison can mean parole, sentence satisfaction, transfer under a detainer, or another lawful movement. Full discharge is later when all VADOC custody and supervision end. The correct proof depends on the event: an active locator result can show custody or supervision, signed facility-release papers establish the actual release transaction, District 4 can resolve local supervision routing, and VADOC records can document a completed discharge.

Search Virginia DOC Releases

The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people presently in VADOC custody or supervision. Its scope includes institutions, probation and parole districts, certain hospitals, state-responsible people in local or regional jails, and CCAP. VADOC says the locator updates daily and warns that data may be inaccurate or untimely. It is not promised as a permanent archive of released or discharged people.

1. Use the seven-digit DOC number when available. It reduces confusion between similar names.
2. Otherwise enter the full last name and at least the first three letters of the first name.
3. Use location, race, gender, or age filters only to narrow a lawful identity match.
4. Read whether the result is a prison location or community-supervision status.
5. If no result appears, contact VADOC for an existing release or discharge record. Do not infer release from absence.

The successful official capture shows the locator's search fields and active-scope warning.

The form is useful for present status. Signed papers or a written record remain stronger proof of the actual release and any receiving authority.

Virginia DOC Records Contact

A person who no longer falls within the active locator's scope may have been fully discharged, but absence can also result from spelling, timing, confidentiality, or a mismatch. Send a focused inquiry that includes the full name, seven-digit DOC number, exact date field, and the specific existing record sought. Ask separately for projected dates and actual release or discharge documentation.

VADOC operating procedures identify projected parole-eligibility, mandatory-parole, and good-time-release dates as information that may be released on written request at the time of inquiry, subject to stated limits and charges. Those values are calculation snapshots. A request for the actual signed release or discharge instrument asks a different question.

Virginia DOC Release Papers

VADOC says a state-facility release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the release date, weather permitting. As applicable, staff read or provide and obtain signatures on the Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, and Conditions of Parole, with signatures, witness, and date. A notification-of-release letter may also document the transition. These are state-prison rules only and must not be applied to either Accomack local jail.

A projected date is not the same as the completed event. Credits, court action, detainers, discipline, or calculation changes can alter a projection. A parole-board grant starts release planning and is not the physical exit time. The dated and witnessed papers show what actually occurred and whether the person left under conditions.

Accomack District 4 Supervision

District 4 serves Accomack and Northampton counties. When the locator changes from a prison location to supervisee status, the district can help resolve office assignment or data-lag questions within disclosure limits. The legal status may be parole, probation, or another supervision category. Court and release documents provide the needed distinction.

Parole is conditional release from a prison term under supervision. Probation is court-ordered supervision and may occur without a prison release. Neither should be guessed from the fact that a person is in Accomack County. Use the locator, the signed conditions, and the court record. When supervision ends, request evidence of discharge if the active profile disappears.

Note: District 4 is a routing and supervision office, not a historical public database of every Accomack County prison release.

DOC and Local Jail Boundaries

Accomack County Jail and Eastern Shore Regional Jail report through Virginia Jail VINE, while VADOC victim notification uses the separate NAAVI system. A transfer from local jail to VADOC is continued custody and can end the useful local VINE path. Eligible victims must use the VADOC route; the systems are not connected. A return to local jail may require a new Jail VINE registration.

This separation explains why one notification enrollment cannot be assumed to track a person through both Accomack jails and the state system.

DOC Detainers and ICE

A detainer is a request or legal basis for another authority to take custody when VADOC's custody ends. If the release paperwork names ICE, another state, a county jail, or federal authorities, the event is a transfer rather than community release. Follow the receiving agency using the identifiers and date on the VADOC papers.

For ICE, the public detainee locator is mainly a current-custody tool and not a release archive. A no-result is inconclusive. For a federal sentence, use BOP. For local custody, use the receiving jail and its VINE path. The Accomack County custody-system overview maps those routes without treating any one locator as universal.

Accomack's Dual-Jail History

Accomack has its own county jail, while Eastern Shore Regional Jail in Northampton also serves Accomack cases. ESRJ opened in May 2007, replacing Northampton's former 30-bed jail. This local structure matters before VADOC responsibility begins. A state-responsible person can wait in either local setting before transfer.

The jail that executed a local release holds that local record. VADOC holds the state custody and supervision records after responsibility shifts. An Accomack court file may span both phases. Building a reliable timeline requires the last local custodian, the VADOC locator or record, and any signed release or transfer paper.
